Our London based tree Surgeons regularly trim various species of hedges for many of our clients in Wandsworth, Wimbledon, Merton and Kingston. Hedges can provide a much more interesting and more ecologically valuable boundary between properties than fences. Privets are probably the most popular choice as they are easy to maintain and can be cut to precise formal shapes.
Privet Hedge Trimming & Maintenance
Privet hedges usually need to be trimmed twice a year to contain the spread of the foliage and to contain their root development. The more frequent the pruning, the tighter and compact the hedges can become. Privets can also be excellent habitat for nesting birds.
Pros & Cons of Conifer Hedges
Conifer Hedges can provide an instant screen for privacy but can easily start to take up space. A major disadvantage to conifers over other species as a choice of hedge is that they can only be trimmed back to the level of green foliage. Once a conifer is cut back to the brown internal growth, it will not regrow. This implies that conifers need to be frequently pruned to contain their width, as they cannot be trimmed back to a more appropriate level.
